As I wake up this morning on the sunny beaches of Cape May, I started to go through my daily RSS feeds and wine news sites. Needless to say, most wine writers, bloggers and everyone else in the business is taking a couple of days off. So, before I take the long trek back up the Parkway to Chateau WCP, I wanted to make an announcement and eat a bit of crow. First, the crow eating. For the past ten years, I have never given any credit to New Jersey winemaking. Most of the wine I have had from Jersey over the years has been complete plonk. However, yesterday we stopped at Cape May Winery and had a flight of their offerings. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Although none of the wines would make any of my favorite lists, if I saw their wines at a store, I would pick up a bottle. The two best of the lot were the Estate Unoaked Chardonnay which was crisp, balanced and showed clean bright pear and apple. The Estate Cabernet was a touch green, but overall it reminded me of a mid-level Cru Bourgeois. Check out the winery here and be sure to stop by their tasting deck off of Townbank Road in North Cape May - it will become a staple for us on future trips.
Finally, on a more personal note - now that I am two years into my career change and our wedding is behind us, I have decided to start studying for the Advanced Sommelier Exam which I plan to take in the fall of 2011. I audited the Advanced class a few years back and it's a hell of an exam. What does this mean to you? When I first started WCP, I thought it was going to be a comprehensive database for facts and figures for all of the wine regions around the world. Then I realized how unbelievably boring that site would be and it would take me the better part of my life to finish the site. So, as I finish studying different regions, I will post my notes so students, bloggers and educators can use it a resource to continue their own education or use the information as a tool to educate others.
I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July weekend and try to stay out of the heat this week.
